1) Before you begin a game, always head for the practice green
and do a few practice putts to warm up your arms and get a feel for the
speed of the greens. Don’t worry too much about holing the putts.
Simply hit the ball toward the hole. The idea is to focus on your
swing, not making the putt.
2) Don’t hold the putter too tightly. You should keep the
pressure on the grip light and even during the swing. Holding the club
too tightly could cause the grip pressure to change during the course
of the swing. This would take the clubface out of square to the target
causing the ball to head in the wrong direction.
3) When addressing the ball, the back of your neck should be
parallel to the ground and the eyes directly above the ball. If you do
this then when sighting your putt you need only turn your head slightly
to look down the line to the hole.
4) It’s hard to hit the ball solidly if the clubhead is slowing
down as it gets near the ball, so make sure the clubhead is
accelerating as it hits the ball.
5) When you’re faced with a long putt the chances of holing it
are slim, so think about where the ball will finish if you don’t sink
the putt. The aim is to ensure an easy second putt, so for instance, it
would make more sense to leave the ball short on a twenty-foot uphill
putt than charge six feet past it to leave a difficult downhill putt.
There are many more putting tips and strategies to help develop a
reliable putting stroke and if you start using the above putting tips
then you will see a big difference. But the key to consistent putting
is practice, practice and more practice. So practice these putting tips
regularly and you’ll soon see your scores tumble.
